Federated Logistics and Operations
Building Type: Office/Warehouse

Federated Logistics and Operations coordinates the merchandise distribution and logistics functions for all Federated department stores, including Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, nationwide. The organization’s primary mission is to reduce costs across the corporation with emphasis on logistics and store operations. Federated has long been recognized as a retail leader in improving and streamlining the distribution process through the use of technology.

Objective
Introduce daylight into various departments including receiving, repair, and customer returns in order to reduce energy consumption and increase the quality and quantity of light available to employees. Additionally, daylight would provide true color rendition for furniture repair and improved product identification for warehousing and shipping.

Products Used

789 Solamaster® Series
Solatube 21-O (21 in/530 mm Daylighting System) with Prismatic Diffusers

Solution
Nearly 800 Solatube Daylighting Systems were used to provide a combination of ambient and task illumination that met or exceeded the current interior illuminance levels in selected areas of the 1.8 million square foot Los Angeles Distribution Center. Ceiling heights range from 15 to 51 feet. The daylighting solution is estimated to reduce the annual lighting energy consumption of the facility by 604,408 kWh and the peak electrical demand by 258.3 kW.

Testimonial
“It all started when the furniture repair department complained that the fluorescent lighting was not providing proper color rendition. Once installed, the natural light provided customers with better quality repairs on furniture and fewer complaints. I selected Solatubes over other products due to the ease of installation, the cost and the amount of light output. Vendors are shocked to hear that there is not a single electric light on when they come into the facility. When people come to see what we did and how it works, the result speaks for itself.”
